While we certainly Porsche engineers care so much about trees and puppies as the next guy, they have not always been focused primarily on building environmentally friendly cars. It does often happen as a byproduct of building race cars, however. A passion for endurance racing is a passion for efficiency, which is a roundabout way to be good for the environment. Their latest ground pounding, track melts, green machine 918 RSR is a step in hybrid technology to a new level of performance.
People familiar with Porsche knows that the brand is known for beating racing cars in an inch of his life to prove that the technology is sound before production. From 911 GT3 R Hybrid, is research hammering together in a qualifying pace in the development of Porsche's flywheel based Kinetic Energy Recovery System. The 918 RSR serves as the latest development mule for this scheme and it is a good sign of what's in store for Porsche's next supercar offers.
The 918 Spyder on the RSR design is based, was first shown in 2010 Geneva Auto Show. It was believed that the concept that blends traditional Porsche mid engine styling and modern technology will be pushed into production quickly as the next flagship supercar. But even that concept was described as a hybrid, take the development a decent time even after Porsche standards.
