Tait has represented South Australia for most of his first class career, has also played matches for Australia A and Durham. Tait made his first class debut for South Australia against Western Australia on 19 December 2002 Adelaide Oval.
Tait was rewarded with his first Cricket Australia contract for 2004-05 season, was filmed in front of the Queensland fast bowler Andy Bichel. Tait missed the opening half of the 2005-06 Pura Cup season with a right shoulder injury he suffered in the 2005 Ashes tour.
